Our District

While formal schooling in Freeport may be traced to the early part of the 19th century, it was on October 7, 1890 that the Freeport Union School District was officially created. The district enrolls approximately 7,500 students and is served by a staff of 900 teachers, supervisors, administrators, paraprofessionals, office staff, food service and maintenance workers. Our buildings and grounds occupy over 100 acres and include the Columbus Avenue Early Childhood Center for Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten, the Archer Street School, the Bayview Avenue School, the Leo F. Giblyn School and the New Visions School for grades 1-4; the Caroline G. Atkinson school for grades 5-6; the J. W. Dodd Junior High School for grades 7-8;  Freeport High School for grades 9-12; and the Administration Building.

The Freeport Public School system is a highly regarded leader in education, and in particular, in the development and implementation of many innovative programs which have become models for other school districts. A Magnet Schools Planning Grant awarded by the New York State Department of Education has enabled the Freeport Community to extend its tradition of excellence to the research and design of four dynamic magnet programs. The award of a Magnet Schools Assistance Program Grant by the United States Department of Education has provided the District with the means to move forward with this initiative. The Magnet  Programs have been designed by each school's Magnet Design Group, based upon the strength of their existing programs and the recommendations of the district-wide Magnet Advisory Council.

Archer, Bayview, Giblyn, and New Visions have personalities all their own that have been shaped by the needs, interests and talents of their administrators, teachers, staff, parents, and children. As Magnet Schools, each offers a distinctive theme and instructional approach that influences the diverse ways in which instructional materials and equipment are used to identify and develop the special interests and gifts that lie within every child.
