Parts of a newspaper, the First Amendment, First Amendment as it applies to schools. What makes news/criteria for a newsworthy story, writing feature stories, sports coverage, conducting interviews, conducting surveys, editorial writing, and advice columns.
Note: TechnologyAll articles submitted for printing in the newspaper MUST be saved on a 3.5 diskette and typed using Microsoft Word Program. Discussion of computer terms and specifications or “specs” needed to run computer software programs. Types of software programs necessary to produce quality newspaper. Use of the internet to secure information needed for research articles.

Editing, censorship, legal vs. ethical advertising (selling and writing ads), importance of technology in newspapers, using a camera, taking quality pictures, and covering sensitive issues.
Note: Layout requires use of Adobe Pagemaker 7.0, Internet searches, computer hardware knowledge, such as: ethernet, scanners, digital camera, “burners” (CD Writers), and laser vs. ink jet printers |
plan, organize and produce a quality school newspaper representative of their skills in and appreciation of journalistic writing and application of said skills to their school environment
Note: Ideally this course will commence in the first semester of the school year as its final product, the school newspaper, is to be an ongoing publication produced on a regular basis
