The Regents recognize the urgency captured in President Obama’s State of the Union address: “In a global economy, a good education is no longer just a pathway to opportunity - it is a pre-requisite. Three-quarters of the fastest-growing occupations require more than a high school diploma. I ask every American to commit to at least one year or more of higher education or career training. We know the countries that out-teach us today will out-compete us tomorrow.” The Regents share this goal with the President, “to ensure that every child has access to a complete and competitive education,” and have acted to use college-readiness as the state’s Proficiency standard.

It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Mr. Thomas Haley, former principal of the Archer Street School. He passed away this weekend, in Florida. Mr. Haley was Principal of The Archer Street School for 28 years. He started his tenure in the Freeport Public Schools as a teacher in August of 1965. On July 1, 1967, he became Principal of the Archer Street School until his retirement on June 30, 1995; a total of 30 years service with the Freeport Public Schools.

Our sincerest condolences to the Mr. Haley's family. He will be missed.

Freeport High School senior Janibell Delarosa was one of 1,000 students nationwide to be named a 2010 Gates Millennium Scholar. She was awarded a good-through-graduation scholarship to use at the college of her choice.

The Gates Millenium Scholars Program, funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, provides outstanding minority students with significant financial need the opportunity to reach their full potential. Janibell, who ranks number eight out of 390 students in her senior class, plans to attend either New York University or SUNY Binghamton to study forensics. She hopes to pursue a career as a forensic psychiatrist.

BilingualBookDiscussion-042910-1228X768 Views about immigration, family and the perception of wealth were shared during the first bilingual book discussion between sixth-grade English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) students from the Caroline G. Atkinson Intermediate School and the members of Freeport Memorial Library’s Bilingual Book Club. Participants read the book, “Esperanza Rising,” a story about a wealthy girl in Mexico who, after sudden tragedy, is forced to flee to California with her mother to start a new life. Atkinson ESL teacher Susan Cunnane was inspired to host the event for her students to engage them in an enriching conversation with adults who could share a different perspective on the book. High School Librarian Rose Luna, who assisted with the event, said it was also a way for the district to recognize National Library Month.

Freeport elementary school librarians pack up boxes filled with books for the students of South Bay Elementary School. Pictured (l. to r.) are: Christine Bishop, Bayview Avenue School; Deborah Bergen, Archer Street School; Mimi Bino, New Visions School; and Lisa Eisenberg, Giblyn Elementary School. Michael Lizardi and Kelly Ramos of Caroline G. Atkinson School also participated in the book drive.

When Freeport elementary school students were temporarily displaced several years ago, schools throughout the county generously donated books to the children. So, when a fire ravaged the South Bay Elementary School in West Babylon, Freeport school librarians knew exactly what to do.

The librarians collected a total of 428 new and gently used books, and packed them up for shipment to Our Lady of Grace Church in West Babylon where classes are temporarily being conducted for the South Bay students. Another 50 books from the Freeport Memorial Library will be included in the delivery.
