Freeport 's Archer Street School Recieves Statewide Recognition for Book Program

October 7, 2004

The Book of the Month program at Archer Street School in Freeport has been recognized by the New York State English Council as a Program of Excellence. It was one of only four programs throughout the state to achieve this honor. The NYSEC selects programs for recognition based on their ability to enrich ELA instruction by offering creative opportunities for teachers and students.

Principal Paula Lein has been invited to go to Albany on October 20-22 to receive an award for her school at the 2004 NYSEC Conference. She was also asked to present a workshop at the conference to explain the program to fellow educators.

Lein started the Book of the Month program to further literacy skills and encourage students to become lifelong learners. Each month Lein selects a book for the whole school to read. Teachers then incorporate all kinds of reading, writing and problem solving activities around the theme of the book. Lein also invites groups of students to share lunchtime Book Talk discussions with her.

Other programs at the school, like Million Minutes of Reading, the summer Garden of Reading program, the annual Dr. Suess Birthday Celebration and special author visits, which have grown from Book of the Month, further enhance a love of reading at the school.

"Teachers, students, and even parents tell me that they love the program," said Lein. "This year, we also have a "Book of the Month" display at Freeport Memorial Library where parents can pick up related reading activities and books to enjoy with their children."
