Atkinson Students Bring Constitutional History to Life

When 5th grade students at Caroline G. Atkinson School set out to learn about the Constitutional Convention of 1787, they didn't just open a book-they took to the stage to reenact history in a musical production entitled "Shh, We're Writing the Constitution".

Students played the roles of George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, Ben Franklin and other key figures involved in drafting the Constitution of the United States . They memorized the preamble to the Constitution as a song, and learned the 1st ten amendments through another song called "Constitutional Rap".

"Staging this show gave students a dynamic and memorable way to learn about American Government-an important part of the 5th Grade curriculum," said teacher Jeanne Dione. "All 110 students in Team IV had a role to play in the production."

Students put on their show for the rest of the school, and also delighted parents and board members when they performed excerpts from the show at a recent Board of Education meeting that was held at Atkinson.
