Read-a-thon Becomes Family Tradition at Atkinson School

October 18, 2004

Caroline G. Atkinson School in Freeport kicked off another year of family reading fun with its 3rd Annual Read-A-Thon. Parents came to school with their children to share activities like "Scrabble", "Mad Libs", Spanish bingo and storytelling. There were also creative activities like the Poetry Pumpkin Patch, where children wrote their own Halloween poems, and Create-A-Book, an activity that had families constructing their own personalized books.

Special guest Lana Noone, author of "Global Mom: Notes from a Pioneer Adoptive Family," shared the story of how she adopted her daughter as part of the 1975 Vietnam Babylift.

Freeport's Raimo Pizza, La Mia Pizzeria, Bella Luna Pizzeria, In a Hurry Pizzeria and Dominos Pizza all donated pizza for everyone. The Atkinson PTA gave each child a special parting gift-a book to take home to read.

"Over the years, the Read-A-Thon has grown into a family event that students, parents and younger siblings look forward to each fall," said Principal Gladys Andrews. "The event supports two of our most important school values: family involvement and love of reading."
