What
do you want to be when you grow up? Students in Freeport Schools
get ample opportunity to give serious thought to that age-old question
at the district’s many Career Day
celebrations at elementary, intermediate and secondary schools throughout
the district.
Archer Street Kaleidoscope of Careers
Archer Street School joined in the tradition this year, with its
first annual Kaleidoscope of Careers, where community leaders and
business representatives from inside and outside the Freeport area
came to speak.
In their classrooms, students were treated to personal presentations
by Deputy Mayor Renaire Frierson-Davis, Assistant Superintendent
for Curriculum Robert-Wayne Harris, Judge Joel B. Meirowitz, and
Officer Chris Wilson with his four-footed partner "Rocky" from
the Freeport Police Department’s Canine Unit. From other guest
speakers, they learned about careers in fields like medicine, architecture,
banking, law, horticulture and graphic design. Their own assistant
principal Kevin Bishop, donned his old military uniform to talk to
the students about his previous career in the U.S. Army. |

Dodd Middle
School Career Day
"Goals to Achieve; Dreams to Pursue" was the Theme of
Dodd Middle School’s Career Day, which has been a semi-annual
tradition at the school for many years. More than 75 speakers talked
to students about dozens of varied careers, including banking and
finance, social work, law, healthcare, public service, engineering,
auto mechanics, real estate, acting, computer science, restaurant
management and telecommunications services.
Special guests included Mayor William Glacken, school board trustee
Carmen Piñeyro, Deputy Commissioner of Consumer Affairs James
Reed and Freeport Electric Superintendent Hubert Bianco.
No matter what the career, the same message was echoed over and
over: "Stay focused on your goal, take your school work seriously,
and don’t let anything deter you from your dreams."
Bayview Avenue School had its annual Career Day in November, and
Carolyn G. Atkinson School ’s annual Career Day will take place
in May. |
