The Freeport High School PTA hosted a joint meeting with
the J.W. Dodd Middle School PTA to promote early college awareness for
parents of 7 th and 8 th graders. Speakers included FHS PTA Co-President
Pat Lewis, Dodd Principal John O'Mard, FHS Dean of Students Beth Elan,
and FHS teachers Arthur Debin and Patricia Desatnick.
Ms. Lewis gave a detailed presentation of the recommended course of study
for students seeking a Regents Diploma, outlining high school course offerings
in math and science. She also presented a check list of high school activities
that students should consider to prepare for competitive college |
Addressing the importance of early planning, Ms. Elan
recommended that parents incorporate college visits into family vacation
plans well before senior year, to give their children a chance to experience
many types of campuses at a more relaxed pace.
Mr. Debin, a science teacher at FHS spoke in more detail about the science
curriculum. Ms. Desatnick addressed the needs of special education students,
and presented some alternatives to a traditional college education.
This meeting was part of an ongoing Early College Awareness |
admissions, including academics, sports, music,
clubs and community service activities. On a lighter note, she recommended
that parents stock up on two items when their children begin the college
application process-lots of tissues and a big bottle of extra-strength
Tylenol.
Mr. O'Mard extended an invitation to parents and students to attend the
second annual Early College Awareness Day, sponsored by J.W. Dodd Middle
School and SUNY Old Westbury. The event will be held on Saturday, March
27 at the SUNY Old Westbury campus. |

visited Dodd, meeting with the younger students in small groups to share
their college preparation experiences and to offer advice about the importance
of academic studies.
