Freeport Students and Rotarians Sponsor $75,000 Food Donation To Local Families

September 30, 2004

Four hundred units of food, personal hygiene products and baby milk-purchased with funds raised by Freeport 's Rotary Club and the Freeport High School Interact Club, and delivered by the "Feed the Children" organization-were given to deserving Freeport families in the parking lot of the Freeport Home Depot store on Sunrise Highway.

FHS Interact Club members helped distribute the goods to families who applied for tickets through their local churches and other community organizations. After all the day's participants received their packages, the remainder was given to Island Harvest, Woodward Children's Center, the INN, and local church organizations. The Freeport Rotary Club raised $5,400, which they were able to use to purchase the food and other products from Feed the Children, valued at $75,000.

Freeport High School's Interact Club, which works in conjunction with the Freeport Rotary Club on local community service projects, was founded last year, under the direction of teacher Wendy Lindner. This year's members are Karla Ramirez, president, Scott Wiener, vice president, Michael Garcia, Sergio Escobar, Nicholas Trotta, Christina Trotta, Jamel Exhem, Nalani Goonetilleke, Jamaal Vanable, and Ashlee Karp. Club members also plan to participate in Human Rights Day at Hofstra University , take part in a breast cancer walk, and raise money for UNICEF. They are also exploring a program where they can help raise seeing-eye dog puppies.

"These kids aren't afraid to roll up their sleeves and really work for a cause they believe in," said Lindner. "They devote an incredible amount of energy and dedication to helping people in need."
