A team of students from Freeport High School will be competing against 32 other Long Island high school teams in the Newsday/News 12 Long Island Challenge. This educational quiz show, now in its eighth season, is designed to test students’ knowledge of math, science, literature, news and local history.
The team of Daniel Okobi, Sarah Mahon, Marilyn Brendel, Yan Mei Luo and alternate Esther Lopez, has been working under the direction of school advisor Joseph Powers. Team members, all seniors, were chosen based on their performance on College Board Advanced Placement Exams. |

Five rounds of competition will air on News 12 between January and June. In the first round of competition, scheduled to air on January 2, 2005 , at 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. , the FHS team will face St. Dominic High School . If the Freeport team advances through all five rounds of competition, it will appear in a championship round, scheduled to air on June 5, 2005 . The school recognized as Long Island Champion will receive $10,000, and each student on the winning team will receive a $500 bond.
