| More than 150 parents, grandparents, neighbors and friends, older siblings and first- to fourth-graders turned out one evening in May to join in the first "Family Game and Dessert Night" at the Archer Street School.
Playing board games, creating puzzles, working on word games, coloring signs, and playing checkers, parents and their children enjoyed an evening of spending time together that was fun and educational at the same time.
"When my son Michael says ‘Let’s play a computer game," I say, "I’ll play if we play a board game," said Michelle Rivera, whose son Michael was busy building words in a game of Upwords. "Next step will be Scrabble!" Mrs. Rivera said.
Principal Paula Lein came up with the idea for the event. "We wanted to involve the parents in the school and give them the chance to engage in fun-oriented English Language Arts and Math activities with their children."

Hungry from tough game-playing, attendees moved into the cafeteria, where a "Vienna-table" style collection of sweets awaited. Archer Street staff had donated donuts, cake, ice cream, cookies, candies, soda, coffee and milk that satisfied the sweetest of sweet-toothed students and the adults who had brought them. |
