Observing, "You're helping children in another part of the world; you're showing that one person can make a difference," Rep. Carolyn McCarthy accepted a check on Valentine's Day for $2,600 from the Archer Street School for the Save The Children Foundation, which McCarthy said would earmark the money to aid the tsunami survivors in southeast Asia.
McCarthy's comments came during the "Act of Kindness" assembly at Archer Street, attended by more than 300 students, parents, faculty and staff who honored students and teachers at the annual event. Hosted by Principal Paula Lein, "Act of Kindness Day" honored third- and fourth-graders nominated by teachers for performing specific acts of kindness and for showing kindness to their fellow classmates, teachers, or community. First- and second-grade students were honored in the morning.
"Everyone should engage in at least one act of kindness every day," Lein told the students, noting that the tsunami survivors had been the cause adopted by the students this year in a "Pennies For Kindness" campaign. Signs reading "Give to the Tsunami Victims," and "Let's show that Archer Street School cares!" covered walls and classrooms where students collected pennies-and often more than just pennies-which all went into a school collection box that eventually totaled a whopping $2,600. In at least one case, Lein noted, a student (who received an award) said he asked his mother to make him a sandwich for lunch so he could donate his lunch money to the cause.
Rep. McCarthy told the students that she would formally address the House of Representatives in Washington, proclaiming the Archer Street School her "School of the Month." "This will be forever kept as a part of the official record of the House of Representatives proceedings!" she explained.
