The Atkinson School held its fourth annual Read-a-thon
Oct. 6, with scores of students and their parents making the rounds
of "stations" in
the school cafeteria, where teachers worked with students on a variety
of activities all centered around reading. Playing Scrabble, writing
poems, reading an actor's part in a script, playing Spanish Bingo, and
pasting the names of favorite books and magazines on a "reading
tree" were some of the activities students pursued during the four
hours of the traditional event.
At one table, students had the chance to speak
with an author, Lana Noone, who wrote the book "Global Mom," describing
her work in adopting babies from Vietnam.
More than two dozen classroom teachers participated in the evening event,
which was organized by school counselor Rosemarie Alario, who arranged
for donations of 30 pizza pies from five area pizzerias: Raimo Pizza,
LaMia Pizzeria and Domino's--all of Freeport--and Bella Luna Pizzeria
and Giovanni Pizza of Baldwin. Students also received new books purchased
with a donation from Keyspan.
On hand at the event was new Atkinson Principal Linda Carter and new
Assistant Principal Connie Velez (6th grade), who joins Assistant Principal
Ayesha McArthur (5th grade). |
