| In front of hundreds of formally attired guests at the American Red Cross—Nassau County chapter’s annual Red & White Ball at the Garden City Hotel Saturday night, April 30, second graders from the Bayview Avenue School put on a polished performance of recitation, history, and song that received a standing ovation.
The Bayview student-performers had been invited by the Red Cross in recognition of the 11 years of fundraising activity that the school’s second graders have conducted, raising a total of more than $24,000. Money was raised via a “Read-a-Thon,” in which students’ completion of books was sponsored by parents, friends, and others, who pledged money for each book read.
Top earners in the Read-a-Thon this year were Skye Carranza ($140), Dominique White ($120) and Alex Gold ($110).
Announcers Kacey Clougher, Monique Simmon and Ayleene Parada introduced their fellow student performers, who discussed Red Cross history and the role of Clara Barton, the founder of the agency. Other students spoke about “What To Do In Case of Fire and Other Emergencies,” and the importance of developing a “Family Disaster Plan.” The children concluded with an original song, “Red Cross Read-a-Thon,” sung to the tune of the Macarena.

At the conclusion of the presentation, officials of the ARC chapter told the children and their teachers that they were going to arrange a party for the Bayview Avenue participants to thank them on behalf of the American Red Cross for their fund-raising efforts and their performance at the gala.
Founder and organizer of the Read-a-Thon program is Cheryle Childs Isreal, who also choreographed the evening’s presentation program and rehearsed the children. Victoria Wallace Jones was music coordinator. |
