In a new initiative, the Freeport High School Guidance Department is assigning guidance counselors to follow first-year students throughout their high school careers. New FHS Principal, Kimberlee Pierre, told the parents and students attending freshman orientation that the counselors would thereby increase their involvement with individual students and be able to counsel them more effectively each grade along the way. Counselors Lisa Dais, who has been working in the district for nine years, and Nichols Angelo, who has been in the district for four years, are each serving roughly half the number of students in the grade. Also assisting with first-year student counseling is a third FHS guidance counselor, Emma Perdomo. "Students at each level have specific concerns that differ," said Dais. "By staying with the students throughout their career we'll be able to understand them and guide them much more responsively and effectively." There are more than 550 students in the first year class at the high school. |
