Seven Freeport High School alumni who were killed in combat during the
Korean War were honored June 9 with the dedication of two shadow boxes
containing information and memorabilia relating to their service in
Korea.
The ceremony, conducted by the FHS Naval Junior ROTC program under
the leadership of Maj. Donald R. Moore, Jr., brought Korean War Veterans
representing local veterans organizations to the event. Guest speaker
was Rear Admiral Floyd H. Miller (USN-Ret.), a 1949 graduate of FHS who
became president of SUNY Maritime College after a distinguished Naval
career in which he held commanding positions during the Korean and
Vietnam wars.
The seven alumni honored are Wilbur L. Bond, Ronald Arthur
Canfield, Clifford H. Craw, Felix Garland, Norbert Francis Holter,
Edward C. Koenke, Jr., and Robert E. McAllister. Holter and McAllister
were in the Marines; the five other alumni were in the Army. |
