The New York State Senate has commended the Freeport High School Long
Island Challenge team for its victory in the 2005 competition sponsored
by Newsday and Cablevision and broadcast on Channel 12. A legislative
resolution, introduced by New York State Senator Charles Fuschillo, Jr.,
who represents Freeport, declared that "It is the sense of this
Legislative Body to commend and pay tribute to those young people who,
by achieving outstanding success in educational competition, have
inspired and brought pride" to New York State and particularly have
"helped enhance the reputation of Freeport as a strong academic
institution with strong academic students."
In a reception in his office in Freeport, Sen. Fuschillo presented two
of the team members, representing the entire team, with copies of the
legislative resolution. The students, Marilyn Brendel and Sarah Mahon,
accepted the resolutions on behalf of the entire team which also
consisted of Daniel Okobi, Jr., Yan Mei Luo and Esther Lopez.
Attending the presentation were social studies teacher Joseph Powers,
who was faculty advisor and coach of the team, and Dr. Eric Eversley,
Freeport School Superintendent. "The kids worked very hard to achieve their win," Powers told Sen.
Fuschillo. "We're particularly proud of the fact that this marked the
first time the school entered the contest and we won it over more
experienced teams. We look forward to making a strong showing next year,
too."
