The Freeport School District once again played a prominent role in the Village’s annual Memorial Day Parade. Coordinated by Charles Puricelli-Coordinator of the Arts, singers and musicians from the Freeport schools sang and played their way along Merrick Road, watched and applauded by hundreds of local residents.
With American flags waving as they passed by, the Freeport High School Marching Band and the Elementary School Marching Band — comprised of students from Archer Street, Bayview Avenue, Giblyn and New Visions — performed for the crowd.
Two FHS trumpeters played "Taps" to honor the Long Island soldiers killed in Iraq.
Across from the reviewing stand, the Atkinson 5th Grade Chorus, sang a selection of patriotic songs, led by music teacher Barbara Wickstein, who encouraged attendees to sing along.
On the reviewing stand, along with Freeport Mayor William Glacken and members of veterans’ organizations, were Freeport Schools Superintendent Dr. Eric L. Eversley, School Board President Carmen Piñeyro and School Board Vice President Debra McQuillan.
The theme of this year’s Memorial Day Observance was "Freedom is not Inherited," and dignitaries noted that "Those who do not appreciate the cost of their freedoms may not be… as supportive of the men and women needed to protect those freedoms." |
