Freeport Students Step Lively To Raise
Funds for Breast Cancer Research
|
Freeport teachers and students were
among the thousands of participants
who strode along the Long Beach boardwalk recently to raise money for
breast cancer research and treatment. In a district-wide effort,
organized by Giblyn teacher Therese Meigh, scores of Freeport walkers
strode behind a Freeport School District banner and raised more than
$7,000.
Individual teachers and student
groups also conducted their own
walks in the "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" walk of five
miles. One group, led by Freeport High
School social studies and
psychology teacher Wendy Lindner, brought members of the FHS Interact
Club to the walk; they raised more than $500 in donations.
Meigh said that the Freeport teachers
began participating in the
walk four years ago; last year, the walkers raised over $8,800 — the
second highest of all Nassau County school districts. For its
fundraising efforts, the Freeport contingent was honored by the American
Cancer Society at its annual dinner.
