Susan Castro, an eighth-grade student at Dodd Middle School who drew a poster that is now part of a worldwide exhibit, was honored at the Freeport School Board meeting April 6.
Castro, 13, entered her “Give Peace a Chance” poster in a global competition sponsored by Lions International. Her work was chosen as the only winner from New York State and one of only 24 posters from entrants around the world that were selected to go on an international exhibition tour. Castro is one of seven U.S. winners. The top prize was won by a student from Hong Kong.
Norm Alpren, Vice District Governor of the Lions Club Nassau County-Bermuda Region, said that more than 350,000 posters were submitted around the world and that Castro’s selection marked the first time in 17 years that a student from a New York State school has been awarded a finalist position. |

Castro’s multi-colored poster shows a world with flags and children of all nations. She did most of the work in her art class at Dodd, taught by Carolyn Jimenez.
At the Freeport Board meeting, officials from the local and regional Lions clubs presented Castro with checks for $500 and $100. The Freeport Lions also gave her a copy of her poster on canvas. Jimenez displayed a framed version of Castro’s poster that will hang in the Dodd library.
The poster, and a photo of Susan Castro, is viewable on the Lions International Web site: www.lionsclubs.org. |
