The resolution originated at the state level with the
New York State School Boards Association, and has been adopted by districts
throughout New York.
Freeport school board president Debra McQuillan called upon local lawmakers
to bring actions or motions to their legislative bodies in support of
the grass roots effort.
In declaring Act for Education Month, the resolution passed by Freeport
and other boards states some of the inequities in school funding in New
York State, including the largest funding gap between high and low income
school districts, one of the highest student achievement gaps, a state
contribution to funding education that is lower than the national average,
and a proportion of total school funding provided by state government
that is at a 50-year low.
“We ask everyone to join us in supporting changes
in state funding formulas that will enable low wealth districts such
as Freeport to close the funding gap,” said McQuillan. “It
is important that our community and its leaders to be aware of our position
with respect to changes in state aid to education.” |
