From parent involvement
to community outreach, math lessons at Archer Street School in Freeport
extend beyond the curriculum—and
beyond the classroom walls. During the recent Family Math Night, more
than 350 parents and students gathered to take part in a host of fun
learning activities.
The cafeteria was the place for delicious endeavors in mathematics,
such as edible dominoes, the Fruit Loop abacus and egg carton math. In
the gym were hands-on learning centers, prepared by each class, exhibiting
the math lessons that the youngsters learn every day. Students and parents
alike enjoyed taking their chances in Math Literature Bingo.
Math specialist Linda Marino, who organized the event, specifically
designed the evening to incorporate all aspects of the math curriculum,
including number sense, geometry, measurement, problem solving, communication
and representation.
“One of our main goals for the evening was to make both parents
and students feel comfortable with math materials,” says Principal
Paula Lein. “By giving students hands-on activities to use at home
with their parents, they can reach even higher levels of achievement.”
During the four-week long Archer Math-A-Thon,
the entire student body worked to solve all kinds of math problems,
including computation and word problems. Their efforts resulted not
only in strengthening their math skills, but also in raising $2,505.67
for St. Jude Children’s
Research Hospital.
“Our students learned essential lessons in math,” says Marino, “but
they also learned the importance of helping children who are less fortunate
than themselves.” |
