FHS WINS THE L.I. CHALLENGE

Dodd Middle Schoolers Help Draft Action Plan During U.N. Videoconference

Approximately 20 seventh-graders from Freeport’s Dodd Middle School presented their own unique views while participating in the United Nations Videoconference on Migration. Along with other students from Bahrain, British Columbia, Mexico City, Santo Domingo and the United Kingdom, the youngsters explored global and local challenges associated with migration.

The Freeport students were the only ones from Long Island to participate and were among presenters from only four schools in the United States.

Prior to the videoconference, the youngsters spent weeks interviewing members of their families (many of whom are recent immigrants themselves), writing reports and making colorful posters illustrating the impact of migration on U.S. culture. Collectively, the students  drafted a Plan of Action for the United Nations during the day-long session.

The Freeport students also communicated with other students from around the globe prior to the videoconference. Chris Gutierrez enjoyed this aspect of the project the most. “I used to only have friends who live in Freeport,” he said. “It’s good to make friends from all over the world.”

The Nassau BOCES Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Technology coordinated the technology involved in the project locally.
