Rachel’s Challenge Returns To
Freeport
Parent, community program at FHS October 18

Rachel’s Challenge—named for Columbine victim Rachel Scott—is
returning to Freeport Schools next week. The award-winning program is designed
to inspire, instruct and enable students to bring positive change to school
environments, and was extremely well received when it was presented in Freeport
for the first time last year.
There will be daytime assemblies and training sessions
at Dodd Middle School and Freeport High School October 17 and 18, and
a powerful session for parents and community leaders on Wednesday,
October 18, at 7 p.m. in the Freeport High School auditorium. All parents
and residents are invited to the evening event, designed to “Help Us Start a Chain Reaction of Kindness” and support
Freeport middle school and high school students as they pledge to meet Rachel’s
Five Challenges:
- Eliminate prejudice of any kind and look for the good in others
- Keep a journal and set goals
- Choose your influences carefully
- Look for the little acts of kindness that make a big difference
- Start a chain reaction with five people you know by telling them that you
love them
Darrell Scott, Rachel’s father and the founder of the program, will
be speaking at Dodd, while his best friend will speak at the Freeport High
School sessions. Some of Mr. Scott’s national television appearances
have been on Oprah, Larry King Live, CNN, the Today Show and Good Morning America.
