Alec Nezin Named Valedictorian of
Freeport High School Class Of 2007
Attending Freeport High School has been a challenging, fun, and sometimes
intimidating experience for Valedictorian Alec Nezin, but he will remember
it as the place that ignited his determination to learn and succeed.
“My greatest strength is my desire to succeed at anything I try,” Nezin
said, crediting his mother for instilling in him that desire. A second influence
has been his math teacher Peter Bruzzo, who since retired.
“He really helped me in high school,” Nezin said. “He
sparked my interest in math and from there it burst into flames.”

A self-proclaimed procrastinator, Alec says,
in the end, it was his will to succeed that overrode that flaw and propelled
him to land the number one spot – valedictorian
of his senior class. The achievement, he says, is the highlight of his high
school career because it made him realize that hard work pays off.
Nezin is a winner of the New York State Education
Department Scholarship for Academic Excellence and the U. S. President’s
Education Award Program, which is for seniors who possess an academic average
of 90 percent or higher and achieve in the 85th percentile or higher in the
math and verbal sections of their SATs.
This fall, he heads to Hofstra University to ultimately
pursue a master’s
degree in engineering. Nezin plans to dorm there and says he’s, “looking
forward to new experiences, learning new concepts and starting over again.”
Alec has always been a student in Freeport schools and
went to New Visions School during his elementary years. In high school he was
a member of the National Honor Society, National Science Honor Society, Odyssey
of the Mind, Mathletes, Robotics Club, Freeport Science and Research Club,
and Science Olympiads. He also participated in the Freeport Science Fair. His
favorite thing to do with his free time is to spend it with his friends.
