FHS WINS THE L.I. CHALLENGE

Bayview Play Reinforces English Language Arts Strategies

It was Broadway at the Bayview School recently when teachers acted out Marcus Pfister’s Rainbow Fish, a colorful tale about the importance of sharing. The performance – a “sell-out” with an audience of 500 parents and children – was part of the school’s annual book club event designed to inform parents about the English Language Arts (ELA) standards currently implemented in classrooms.

Each year, a site-based team brings to life a piece of literature the children can relate to. In addition to illustrating the concept of sharing, this popular children’s book provided a glimpse into the critical reading strategy of sequencing as the performers emphasized the main character’s feelings during the beginning, middle and end of the story.

“Our goal for this annual event was to collaborate with parents and teachers to improve student literacy and promote a love for reading in a family atmosphere,” said Principal Odette Wills. “This year, the Family Book Club event, ‘Catch the Wave: Dive into Reading,’ served as a timely kick-off for our new nightly reading program. I am honored to work with such an extraordinary team of professionals who continue to give of their personal time and talents for the benefit of our students.”
