Columbus Avenue
Kindergartners Celebrate 100 Days
|
| It was a sea of red at the Columbus Avenue School as teachers, faculty and kindergartners
gathered in the gymnasium for the annual 100th Day of School Celebration. Since September,
the youngsters have been participating in a variety of activities allowing them to gradually count
to 100 – a key concept in their math learning. Last Monday, they sported red shirts, skirts and pants for the culminating ceremony of jumping, singing and enjoying a beautiful cake with candles. |

Principal Peggy Miller said involving the youngsters in hands-on activities over a period of time allowed them to begin understanding the number 100. She said children at this age have difficulty comprehending quantities much beyond their age.
Projects the children worked on since the beginning of the school year were displayed in the hallways. One was a poster with a child’s name written on it 100 times. Another youngster made a necklace using 100 fruit loops. All of the kindergarten teachers worked with their students collecting and counting paper clips, pictures and other items. |

| Event coordinators Raquel Lucas and Michelle Iannuzzo acknowledged everyone’s participation. “Our teachers, faculty and parents did a great job pulling this program together,” Lucas said. “The children love this celebration and enjoyed all of the activities.” And they accelerated their math skills.
