“Thank you honorees. Our
communities cannot get by without people like you.” These words
from Nassau County Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey echoed the sentiments
of other officials at a recent ceremony recognizing outstanding educators
including four from Freeport.
Dr. Eric Eversley, superintendent of Freeport
Public Schools; Renee Crump, principal of Freeport’s New Visions
School; Florence Bell, Freeport High School English teacher; and
Carol Gilliam, Freeport High School librarian were among the eight
honorees.
Crump, whose school was recognized by the U.S.
Department of Education as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, also
accepted Eversley’s
award in his absence. Florence Bell and Carol Gilliam were honored for
their work as co-presidents of the Black Educators’ Committee of
Freeport as well as at Freeport High School. They were all acknowledged
by officials from Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi’s office at
an annual ceremony for Nassau County educators who are making a difference
in the lives of students. The event was held prior to African-American
Night at Eisenhower Park, which was sponsored by the African-American
Genealogical Society. |
