Freeport Educators Honored By County Executive Tom Suozzi

“Thank you honorees. Our communities cannot get by without people like you.” These words from Nassau County Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey echoed the sentiments of other officials at a recent ceremony recognizing outstanding educators including four from Freeport.

Dr. Eric Eversley, superintendent of Freeport Public Schools; Renee Crump, principal of Freeport’s New Visions School; Florence Bell, Freeport High School English teacher; and Carol Gilliam, Freeport High School librarian were among the eight honorees.

Crump, whose school was recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, also accepted Eversley’s award in his absence. Florence Bell and Carol Gilliam were honored for their work as co-presidents of the Black Educators’ Committee of Freeport as well as at Freeport High School. They were all acknowledged by officials from Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi’s office at an annual ceremony for Nassau County educators who are making a difference in the lives of students. The event was held prior to African-American Night at Eisenhower Park, which was sponsored by the African-American Genealogical Society.

“I want to reach out to these honorees and give them each a hug, because we appreciate and value them for the work they do,” said Nassau County Deputy Commissioner of Parks Andrew Hardwick. “They are the best in their communities.”

Freeport Public Schools is a diverse innovative district on Long Island’s South Shore serving about 6,750 students in grades Pre-K through 12. The district and its eight schools take pride in having the region’s only magnet schools of choice, a longstanding and award-winning classroom English/Spanish Dual Language Program, and a high school where students excel in competitions that include the regional Academic Challenge, Odyssey of the Mend and Future Problem Solving International.
