Melvin
Green Named Salutatorian
of
Freeport High School Class of 2007
“If you have something you want to achieve,
just do it without hesitation.” That’s
what Freeport High School Salutatorian Melvin Green says about his plans to
attend Columbia University this fall.
Green is setting his sights on becoming a pediatrician because he enjoys
the sciences and loves children, but admits that he also has a penchant for
fine art and foreign languages.
An alumnus of Bayview Avenue School, Green attended
Freeport Schools throughout his school career. His fondest memory of high
school is having the opportunity to explore so many interests. Among Green’s activities were the Distributive
Education Clubs of America (DECA), Key Club, student government and mixed chorus. He
was treasurer of both National Honor Society and the Class of ’07 Committee. His
greatest accomplishment, however, was ranking second in his graduating class
for which he credits his parents.

“My dad and mom inspire me the most because they show me that there is
always room for improvement and only through hard work will you gain success,” Green
says.
Green has earned the New York State Education
Department Scholarship for Academic Excellence, the Woodmen of the World
American History Award and the President’s
Education Award given to seniors for outstanding educational growth,
improvement and commitment.
According to a survey filled out by Freeport’s top 10 students, Green
is viewed as the individual who stands out the most in the class. His
fellow class members say he is an intelligent, hard working, multi-talented
person who is always willing to lend a helping hand.
Green, who says he is most happy when he strives to do better, is looking
forward to exploring a whole new world in college, where he can hone his talents
and study what interests him the most.
Advice he gives for younger students: “Take
advantage of every opportunity in high school and get involved as much as
you can. You never know where it will lead you.”
