Freeport Schools Music Ensembles Earn Accolades For Outstanding Performances

Five performing groups from Freeport Public Schools earned recognition for outstanding musical performances at various spring competitions.

The Freeport High School Band, under the direction of Justin Friedman, took first place at the Dorney Park "Music in the Parks" festival while the Dodd Middle School Band and Orchestra, under the direction of Adam Rubin and Jill Kohn, earned superior ratings at the "Trills and Thrills" festival held at Great Adventure.

The Atkinson Chamber Ensemble, under Candace Mordhorst's direction, and the Freeport High School Mixed Chorus, under Stephen Pagano's direction, both earned  gold medals at the New York State School Music Association's (NYSSMA) Major Ensemble Festival. The highest honor awarded to Freeport went to the Freeport High School Select Chorale, also under Pagano's direction, which captured a gold medal with distinction.

Freeport Public Schools is a diverse, innovative district on Long Island’s South Shore serving about 6,750 students in grades Pre-K through 12. The district and its eight schools take pride in having the region’s only magnet schools of choice, a longstanding and award-winning classroom English/Spanish Dual Language Program, and a high school where students excel in competitions that include the regional Academic Challenge, Odyssey of the Mind and Future Problem Solving International.

The district’s New Visions School of Exploration and Discovery has been named a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education for its high student performance and engaging curriculum.
