Freeport H.S. Teacher Named Educator of Excellence

The New York State English Council (NYSEC) has selected Freeport High School English Teacher Virginia Schmitt DeFrancisi as an Educator of Excellence. The award honors teachers considered leaders in the classroom, who strive to improve instruction. DeFrancisci and her fellow award winners were honored at the organization’s 56th Annual Conference Awards Luncheon in Albany, New York.

DeFrancisi has been teaching secondary English at the high school for 18 years. During this time, she’s busied herself with several extracurricular activities. For five years, she’s led the Literature and Composition Advanced Placement course, which offers teenagers the opportunity to earn college credit. She’s also worked with at-risk students and served as advisor of the school’s literary magazine, Vintage. Currently, she’s involved with the school newspaper, Flashings.

“It was nice to be acknowledged,” DeFrancisci said when asked how she felt about receiving the award. “I want to point out however, that there are many teachers in Freeport doing creative things in their classrooms.” DeFrancisci added she likes teaching at the high school because the student population is so diverse. She said it’s particularly satisfying working with students on different publications because it helps them to find their voices.

One of the objectives of NYSEC is to stimulate the self-development and professionalism of English Language Arts teachers. An affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of English, it also acknowledges the unique contributions of individual instructors.
