IT’S TIME TO REGISTER FOR FREEPORT’S
SPRING ADULT EDUCATION COURSES

Theresa Schaefer/Felicia Febrizio
FREEPORT, N.Y., Jan 17, 2008

Freeport Public Schools’ spring session of Adult Education is set to run from early March through early May with 10 new courses and exciting new adventures in the offerings.

On the technical front, new computer classes and staff members have been added, and some classes have been reorganized to meet the needs of the community. Courses include Windows, Publisher, Word and Excel.  Word is now available in three parts, with each session concentrating on specific aspects of the program. The Excel classes are being offered in two parts to provide a better understanding of how the program is used.

For ways to get in shape, to meet new people or for sheer enjoyment, try the spirited Line Dancing class—no partner needed. Ballroom Dancing has been separated from Swing, Hustle and Latin Dancing at your request, while Belly Dancing continues to be offered on two nights.

Looking for a good workout? Adult Education is fortunate to have Jimmy Jones join the staff with a new course in Strength Training for Everyone. Whether a novice or an expert, this class will improve your overall fitness.   Also being offered are Pilates, Bone Building, Yoga, Tai Chi, Self Defense, Aerobics plus Abs and Self Defense.  There is even an afternoon Senior Workout on the schedule.

Since food and cooking are all the rage, residents now have the opportunity to enjoy a cooking demonstration by a professional chef and then sit for a wonderful meal. There are three different restaurants participating: Ayhan’s Shish Kebab Restaurant, E.B. Elliot’s and Blue 42 (formerly 42 Woodcleft). Two are for dinner and one is for lunch. Sign up for all three at the same time and receive a 10 percent discount. Also available is a hands-on Cake Decorating Workshop that will teach residents how to make beautiful confectionary creations.

Exploring a new career? Adult Education can help. New this semester is Careers in Private Investigation. This can be a full-time or part-time career. Also being offered are Become a Notary Public, Notary Signing Agent, Real Estate Sales Licensing Course, Home-Based Child Care and Getting Paid to Talk.

Be safe on the road or on the water with Defensive Driving, Basic Boating and the Marine Captain’s Course and Coast Guard Test.  In addition, Adult Education hosts, through AARP, a Driver’s Safety Program for drivers over the age of 50. The New York State Approved Driver’s Education for high school students over the age of 16 is also being offered.

Knitters who have mastered the scarf and are ready to work with a pattern can join Knitting with a Pattern and knit a vest.  Dreamed of being a virtuoso? Then try Piano lessons. Both beginner and advanced classes are available.

In addition, the following one–night seminars are being offered this session: Handling Arthritis, Dealing with Challenging Kids, Five Factors of Health, Medicaid Myth, How to Achieve Peak (Not Perfect) Performance and Make-Up Madness.  The speakers are highly respected professionals in their field.

The Adult Education catalog and a printable application can be found on the school district’s Web site at freeportschools.org. Double click on Adult Ed: Spring Course Catalog, located the left side of the page.  To receive a catalogue, to register or for more information residents, may visit the Adult Education office Monday through Friday, 8:30a.m.–3:30 p.m., at 235 North Ocean Ave., or call 516-867-5314.
