Getting A Jump On Preventing Heart Disease

FREEPORT, N.Y., Feb. 26, 2008
by Theresa Giusto/Felicia Febrizio
F ifth-graders at Atkinson Intermediate School raised nearly $1,700 during the school’s recent Jump Rope for Heart fund-raising campaign. The event provided an opportunity for children to participate in physical activity and learn the warning signs of heart disease and stroke, according to physical education teacher Christina Bivona. The money raised will go to the American Heart Association.  Prior to this campaign, the sixth-graders raised $1,500 in a similar fund raiser called Hoops for Heart in which they played basketball games.
