Photography Project Bridges Knowledge between Grade Levels

FREEPORT, N.Y., June 17, 2008
by Theresa Giusto/Felicia Febrizio
Knowledge about cameras and developing prints were the topic of a picture-perfect day shared between academically gifted fourth-graders and high school photography students.

Fourth-grade Project Challenge students from Archer Street School display their pinhole cameras and photography negatives. Pictured with the students are Freeport High School photography teacher Lloyd Burkett, Ph.D. and Project Challenge Teacher Deborah La Corte.

Archer Street School’s Project Challenge students conveyed their knowledge of creating negatives using pinhole cameras, while the high school students demonstrated printing and enlarging photographs from negatives in the dark room.

The academic partnership bridged grade levels and abilities and created an environment of learning that was enjoyed by everyone, according to Project Challenge teacher Deborah La Corte and high school photography teacher Lloyd Burkett, Ph.D., coordinators of the event.

A letter written to the fourth-graders by one of the high school students encapsulated the feeling of the day, "Being with you was an incredible experience. I was as excited about helping you as you were about helping me…"

Freeport Public Schools is a diverse, innovative district on Long Island’s South Shore serving about 6,750 students in grades Pre-K through 12. The district and its eight schools take pride in having the region’s only magnet schools of choice, a long-standing and award-winning classroom English/Spanish Dual Language program, and a high school where students excel in competitions that include the regional Academic Challenge, Odyssey of the Mind and Future Problem Solving International. The district’s New Visions School of Exploration and Discovery has been named a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education for its high student performance and engaging curriculum.
