High School Junior To Attend Prestigious Summer Program

Freeport High School junior Martin Lyttle is among 29 other students out of more than 600 applicants to get accepted into the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's prestigious program, the Minority Introduction To Engineering, Entrepreneurial, and Science, otherwise known as MITES. Lyttle's acceptance was determined after he submitted a lengthy application along with a transcript of his grades, and a letter of recommendation from his math and science teachers and guidance counselor. Martin said, "I am really excited about participating in the program. I look forward to meeting some of the people that I might study with when I attend college."
The summer program, which will run from June 24 until August 24, will provide Lyttle with a hands-on overview of the academic and social life that is commonly found on a university campus, promoting a better preparation for university life, both academically and socially. It also will offer him insight into the available opportunities in the fields of engineering and science.

MIT has enrolled nearly 330 MITES alumni as of 1999. In addition, many MITES program graduates have studied at a number of prestigious colleges, including Brown, Cal Tech, Columbia, Drexel, Georgia Tech, Harvard, Princeton, Purdue, and Stanford.

Many MITES alumni have also gone on to distinguished careers such as engineers, scientists, physicians, teachers, and entrepreneurs.
