Caroline G. Atkinson School sixth graders in the Freeport School District recently got a firsthand glimpse at a variety of jobs while attending their first ever Career Day. Veterinarians, firefighters, police officers, UPS, and even a football player, filled the Atkinson School as young aspiring sixth graders spoke with them about the career of their choice.

More than sixty entrepreneurs attended the event. Executive Director for Freeport Fire Department Raymond Maguire was among many of the representatives. "I feel it is important to do these types of events," said Mr. Maguire, who is an Atkinson School alumnus. "When I attended school here, there were people that I looked up to who helped me mold myself into an adult." He added, "I hope to make on a impact on these students' future in the same way that people made an impact on my future when I was young."

Atkinson School Guidance Counselor Rosemarie Alario said that Career Day is expected to be a long term tradition for the school. "This event gives students exposure to different careers. It offers an authentic view and it builds awareness," she said, "A teacher cannot come in and speak for someone else's career. Someone who is actually in that career is the most informative about the personal experience, growth, and the pros and cons of the job."

"This event really allows us to meet up with people in certain careers," sixth grader Joseph Perez agreed." "It also lets us ask them questions to find out what they do in certain situations."

All the students took notes as the hopped around from booth to booth. Before the event, students received a Career Game Explorer Book to help guide them to the career that interested them the most. Ms. Alario said, "Career Day showcased professional jobs that require different college degrees, as well as occupations that require on the job training, trade school, and apprenticeships."
