FHS Students Intern at Grumman
For the second year, five Freeport High School students had the opportunity to participate in a paid internship program at the Northrop Grumman offices in Bethpage. The students, Michael Drew, Ryan Sammy, Deniqua Smith, William Tetreault and Akkie Thompson, were selected for the program based on their applications, teacher recommendations and interviews. The interns discovered some of the responsibilities, dynamics, expectations and demands many workers experience on a daily basis in four work experience opportunities: web design projects, desktop publishing, computer repair and platform engineering. The graduates of the program have wonderful memories of this unique work experience opportunity. One of the interns, Michael Drew, was asked to present his comments about the experience to the Long Island School-To-Career Partnership/SCOPE conference of business leaders and educators. This School-To-Career partnership with Northrop Grumman has created opportunities for Freeport students that will help them select pathways toward their future endeavors. The internship program was implemented under the Leadership Exchange for Achievement through Partnership Day initiative of John Loonam, Manager, Planning & Communications Integration & Engineering, and Marilyn Stuzin, Director of Adult, Alternative, Family and Workforce Prep Education.
