ayview Avenue third-graders and Freeport firefighters worked together recently through a new program, “Hooked on Firefighters,” designed to spark the children’s interest in fire safety, community awareness and positive role models.
Developed by the school’s Co-Lead Social Worker Cindy Misrock, in collaboration with the Executive Director of the Freeport Fire Department Ray F. Maguire, the program’s goals are trifold: to introduce students to a curriculum that incorporates the New York State learning standards and teaches fire safety; to build partnerships between the Freeport Fire Department, the PTA and the community; and to introduce positive role models to third-grade students.
Nine firefighters, including ex-chiefs and ex-captains, visited the school. Each firefighter was assigned to a third-grade class where fire safety was discussed. Students shared their knowledge of four different fire hazards. Three additional visits are scheduled during which time firefighters will work on activities that have been developed to meet the New York State learning standards. |
