| Students at the J.W.
Dodd Junior High School recently received their prizes for their
participation in the American Heart Association's Hoops for the
Heart. During the event, junior high students worked together to
raise more than $1,200 for the American Heart Association. To help
out the cause, seventh and eighth graders spent four weeks collecting
sponsorship money and donations from family members and friends.
They also
took to the basketball court to participate
in a Free Throw Challenge. As part of the competition, students
had to shoot the most baskets within one minute.
All of the participants received prizes.
Seventh grader Alex Raser raised the most money for the cause, earning
$200 in donations. Alex said, "Doing this makes me feel good
because I know that I helped out the cause and helped out some people."
Alex's hard work earned her a number of prizes, including a t-shirt,
water bottle, miniature basketball hoop, sport kit, and a full-sized
basketball.
Seventh grader Tangie Chapman raised
$95 for the cause. Although she also won prizes, Tangie said. "I
did it to make a difference in someone's life. I did it from my
heart."
Physical Education teacher and event
coordinator Paulette Pearsall said she has organized the event for
several years. "This event is worthwhile. They are giving of
themselves for someone else. When you don't know who you are giving
to, it becomes more from the heart and more personal," Ms.
Pearsall said. "In order to become a more well rounded person,
it is better to give than receive. It is definitely a character
building event."
As part of their participation, the
students spent some time learning about charity and fundraising,
as well as about the American Heart Association.
