Elementary students at the Caroline G. Atkinson School recently presented the American Heart Association with a check for $8,680. The students raised the funds from donations and sponsorship money they received from family members and friends while participating in the American Heart Association's Jump Rope for Heart. "The students' contributions reflect a tremendous effort and they are greatly appreciated," American Heart Association representative Larry Pyser said.

After collecting money for the cause, the students finished off their fundraising with an annual Jump Rope for Heart that promoted exercise and the importance of a healthy heart. Students participated in the weeklong event engaging in a number of physical activities for 80 minutes including jump rope. Double Dutch jump rope, step aerobics, and dancing.

Physical Education teacher and event coordinator Christina Bivona said, "I have organized this event for the past five years because it is for such a great cause. You cannot say no to something like this. It has an impact on everyone."

Fifth-grade student Franke McGoldrick collected $1,000 from friends and family members for the cause. Franke, who dedicated his funds in his uncle's memory said, "I participated in the Jump Rope for Heart because there have been a lot of people in my family and others that I know who have had heart attacks. I feel that the donations will help to prevent heart attacks by going toward research for a cure."
