Making A Difference

Freeport High School students recently spent a Saturday cleaning up their neighborhood park. From 9 a.m. until I p.m., students in grades nine through twelve joined administrators in sprucing up Freeport's Milburn Park. Using rakes, garbage bags, and their strength, students collected litter and gathered leaves to spruce up their newly adopted park. They also picked up stray branches that were lying around. Several teachers and administrators participated in the cleanup, as well as Freeport police and fire department officials. Among those included Freeport High School Principal Dr. Enid Margolies and Freeport Police Chief Mike Woodward. In addition, Freeport High School student leader Kimley Straughn helped coordinate the event, along with teacher and Key Club Advisor Pam DiMalo. |
| The cleanup was part of Freeport High School's Neighborhood
"Good Neighborhood" program. Dr. Margolies said, "The
youngsters use the park, so they understand they have a responsibility
in maintaining the park and keeping it safe and clean." After
cleaning up the park, high school students are already looking forward
to their next project in the "Good Neighborhood" program.
They recently applied to the Parks Department for a permit to allow
them to sand and paint the park benches. Their application is currently
under review. |
