Acceptable Use Policy for Freeport Public Schools

The Freeport Public Schools recognize the importance of the use of computer technology as an integral part of the education process. In furtherance thereof, the Freeport Public Schools have invested a tremendous amount of time, money and effort to provide the students of the Freeport Public Schools with access to networks on the Internet so that the students will be able to search and download from the world wide web, use e-mail and Netscape/Microsoft Internet Explorer.

In consideration of the Freeport Public Schools' willingness to provide the aforesaid access to networks on the Internet and in order to ensure continued access, I,______________________ as parent/guardian of _______________, and I,____________________, as student (hereinafter "Student") agree as follows:

  1. The Student is responsible for the proper and ethical use of network access through the computers by following the written procedures set up by the Freeport Public Schools, as well as, the oral instructions given by the staff. Any actions by the Student that might harm and computer equipment or software or impair the effective use thereof are to be avoided.
  2. Prior to the Student's use of the computer and access to the internet, the student will be required to attend a presentation on the aspects of security and ethics involved in use of the network.
  3. The Student is prohibited from allowing anyone else to use their account name and/or password. Violation of this rule by the Student will jeopardize the Freeport Public School's access to the Internet and the Student will immediately lose their right to network access.
  4. It is a violation of the law for the Student to access any network files, documents, applications, etc. without express permission by an authorized staff member and a legal signature on the network registry.
  5. There are multiple computers available for the student access. The teaching staff of the Freeport Public Schools cannot monitor all of the information that the Student is accessing or downloading while in the classroom, not while the Student is away from school. The Student may encounter material in a network/bulletin board that is considered inappropriate or offensive (e.g. pornography, vulgar jokes, statements of belief that some may consider immoral, etc.) The Student is responsible for NOT pursuing material that could be considered inappropriate or offensive. Accessing or downloading of inappropriate material will not be tolerated by the Freeport Public Schools and will result in the Student's loss of the privilege of using the network, and may result in academic penalty and/or disciplinary action.
  6. To abide by all rules and regulations hereafter promulgated.

I acknowledge that I have read the above, and agree to abide by the aforesaid rules and to be responsible for my access to networks on the Internet and my use of the computer equipment.
