Bayview Avenue School
of Arts and Sciences

Wwelcome to BAYVIEw AVENUE SCHOOL

Rooted in the principles of the Foxfire Philosophy, academic instruction at Bayview Avenue School of Arts and Sciences immerses children in authentic learning experiences including goal setting aligned with the New York State standards, active learning and making real world connections. Teachers as facilitators and collaborators provide students with opportunities to explore and make discoveries independently and in small groups. Students’ curiosity and grade-appropriate topics are incorporated to create innovative and motivating learning experiences. It is not uncommon to walk amidst colorful murals inspired by studies of different countries, unique animals and their habitats, or by our popular “Artist-of-the-Month”. Evidence of serious scientific inquiry permeates classrooms. Growing plants, observing pets, taking nature walks, hypothesizing, and experimenting are all in a day’s work at the School of Arts and Sciences.

The school theme of arts and sciences is manifested in teacher designed curriculum and is daily integrated into instruction and student learning. Among the magnificent learning experiences at Bayview, Exhibit Night and the Interactive Science Fair are our most celebrated. Everyone is welcomed to witness and indulge in our students’ work. Each class selects a theme and works on rich, integrated units which are attractively displayed as a teaching resource for our students.  Whether it’s the solar system, buoyancy, or living organisms, through unique presentations, our children engage in meaningful, challenging learning experiences. From trained resident experts (a.k.a. Bayview Ambassadors) guiding visitors through our building, to pleasant and knowledgeable students manning the science stations, immeasurable talent abounds.

Bayview is a place where “we are a family and learning is fun” and it is no wonder we go to great lengths to keep our families involved. Families are embraced as partners as they begin the school year in September’s back to school orientation and celebration, Family Night.  Active family involvement continues through teacher-produced and enacted children’s literature-based plays which evolve from selections read in school and the Family Book Club.  Offering teaching strategies and food, productions like “Spaghetti Eddie” and “Strega Nona” are always the talk of our community of learners.

Real world connections are clear. We have local community, national, and international partnerships with arts, social, health and civic agencies:

Molding great citizens is yet another Bayview goal. Our Random Acts of Kindness initiative and our Bee Your Best Character Education Program help foster the morality, caring, integrity and respect within students, and in turn, an environment where the school family makes learning emotionally and intellectually rewarding.
