Freeport students honor World Down Syndrome Awareness Day

Freeport Schools recognized World Down Syndrome Day with awareness initiatives across the district including wearing crazy socks, advocating for support of people with Down syndrome and their families and educating each other on what Down syndrome is.

Students and teachers from Ms. Jana Bisceglie’s classroom at Caroline G. Atkinson Intermediate School wore colorful, mismatched socks to show their support and raise awareness. Students spoke about the importance of embracing diversity and fostering inclusivity for individuals with Down syndrome.

“The goal is to create a learning environment where every student feels valued and empowered,” said teacher Jana Bisceglie. “By participating in awareness initiatives, we are not only raising awareness but also fostering a culture of empathy and inclusion.”

The day reinforced the school’s commitment to acceptance, understanding and equal opportunities for all.
