A Message from the Superintendent – 1/16/26
Posted on 01/16/2026

Dear Freeport Community,

I am writing to inform you of an incident that occurred at this evening’s girls’ varsity basketball home game. During the competition, one of the referees experienced a serious medical emergency. 911 was immediately called and the referee was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. We have been informed that the individual is conscious and speaking.

I would like to thank our dedicated staff members who responded immediately to the situation and provided comfort and care to the referee prior to the arrival of the EMT first responders. They were also instrumental in assisting with the orderly discharge of those in attendance following the decision to cancel the remainder of the game.

We realize witnessing a situation like this can be extremely upsetting, especially to our younger fans in the stands. In addition to counseling being made available to members of the basketball team tomorrow,  any students who were at the game and want to speak with one of our mental health professionals may do so starting at 11AM at the high school. Monday schools are closed in recognition of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Counseling will be made available when students return to school on Tuesday, January 20th.

I want to thank all those in attendance at the game for their understanding, compassion and cooperation during this difficult situation.

Sincerely,
Dr. Alice Kane
