The Future Problem Solvers of Freeport High School have made it to the New York State Championships! The Future Problem Solving Program is a program designed to engage students in creative problem solving and stimulates critical thinking skills, as well as encourages students to develop a vision for the future. The Program features curricular and co-curricular competitive, as well as non-competitive, activities which require students to use higher-level analytical techniques and cooperative discussion to solve issues in our ever changing global society.
After a recent qualifying event at Freeport High School, five teams from the school were chosen to participate in the competition at the Championship Bowl in New York City for advancement to the State level. The many years of dedicated and focused coaching by Lauren Calvo and Angela Wheat have certainly paid off as this is the first time Freeport has had five teams proceed to the State level. The competition which occurred on March 14th required a two-hour block where students were mandated to read a future scene that was to take place in 2041 and focused on pollution in the Danube River. Teams of four brainstormed sixteen problems, an underlying problem, sixteen solutions, a rating grid, and a final action plan.
The teams will be participating in the Championship Bowl in New York State on April 2nd. During this competition, they will perform a short skit based on their final action plan. We wish our teams the best of luck! We have no doubt they will continue to make the Freeport community proud!
