Celebrating the Success of Freeport Schools’ Winter Sports Teams

The Board of Education meeting on March 20 was full of proud moments as the Board of Education and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham recognized several Freeport High School athletes and teams for a successful winter sports season.  

The J.W. Dodd Drama Club entertained with an amazing performance of “Be Our Guest,” from their production of “Beauty and the Beast,” followed by the dance team who performed their routine “If I Were a Rich Girl.”  

Freeport High School wrestling team member, Juan Ramos, was recognized for his outstanding season placing second in the Nassau County Championships and qualifying for New York State Championships. In addition, Juan demonstrated exceptional leadership and determination as the captain of the wrestling team. 

The Freeport High School boys track 4x4 team finished third place at the state championships, and a special recognition went to senior Jordan Quinn who finished second in the 55 hurdles, running the third fastest time recorded in New York State and setting the Section VIII record. 

The Freeport varsity cheerleading squad was celebrated for several achievements. Overall, an undefeated season in Nassau County and for winning the Empire Regional in the All-Girls Division, a first for the squad. The varsity cheerleading squad also had their Game Day Team make it to the semifinals at nationals and the traditional team finished second at the New York State Finals.

George Zito, district athletic trainer and high school physical education teacher, was recognized for being selected as the Nassau County Section VIII Athletic Trainer of the Month award. 

“We are incredibly proud of our scholar athletes for their efforts and achievements on the field, in the classroom and on the stage,” said Dr. Kuncham. “You are extraordinary individuals. Thank you for being who you are and for making Freeport proud. Thank you to our coaches and our Freeport families who bring the best out of these students.”
Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Kishore Kuncham, Board of Education President Maria Jordan-Awalom and Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics, Jonathan Bloom presented each student with a medal and school pin as a reminder of their successful seasons and accomplishments. 

The Board of Education congratulates Juan Ramos, the boys winter track 4x4 team, Jordan Quinn and the varsity cheerleading squad on their successful seasons and commends them for their dedication and hard work.
