Throughout the District students learned about the history and meaning of Diwali, one of the major religious festivals in Hinduism, Jainism and Sikhism symbolizing the victory of light over darkness.
At New Visions Elementary School, students created a bulletin board, lanterns and post cards and listened to readalouds about the significance of Diwali. Students also created diyas or lamps in art class, which were displayed in the lobby of the school. The students at Archer Street School made clay diyas which they painted and decorated while learning the meaning of the Diwali festival. During the Diwali celebration at J.W. Dodd Middle School, students learned about the significance of the various Diwali traditions and handed out treats and infographics to their peers upon arrival to the school. The lobby of the school was also decorated with banners, signs and beautiful lights. During social studies classes at Freeport High School, students participated in lessons teaching the students about the history and significance of the Diwali holiday.
