Sixteen students from Freeport High School jumped into the world of quantum computing during an intensive weeklong workshop at the New York Hall of Science in Queens in August. The program guided the students through the fundamental principles of quantum computing and provided them with hands-on experience in the rapidly developing field.
We are incredibly proud of these students for taking an interest in this innovative field, said Director of Science Dr. Vincent Pereira. “By participating in the program, our students are not only enhancing their understanding of quantum computing but also preparing themselves to be leaders in the technology industry.
The workshop also helped to prepare the students for Freeport High School’s new quantum computing course which began at the start of the 2024-2025 school year. This course makes Freeport the first school district on Long Island to provide such an advanced curriculum to high school students. Developed with guidance from Stony Brook University and Brookhaven Lab, the course is typically offered to college undergraduates.
The class will enable Freeport students to build on the knowledge they gained during the workshop, offering them a competitive edge in science and technology education.
“Offering challenging courses like quantum computing at the high school level is crucial to ensuring our students have access to challenging and cutting-edge subjects early on,” said Superintendent of Schools Ms. Fia Davis. “We want our students to be innovators and leaders in whatever field they choose to pursue. Programs like quantum computing are part of our commitment to providing Freeport students with the best education possible.”
At the conclusion of the quantum computing workshop, each of the Freeport students received a certificate of completion, marking their desire to master the concepts of quantum computing.
