Two science teachers receive distinguished awards

Two district science teachers have been chosen to receive the most Outstanding Science Teacher in Nassau County award by the Science Teachers Association of New York State. The Freeport School District is the only school district in Nassau County to achieve this prestigious recognition.

J.W. Dodd Middle School science teacher Peter Capaccio was recognized with the Intermediate Science Award and Archer Street School science teacher Donna Rusinek was recognized with the Elementary Science Award. Both teachers were honored during a special awards ceremony on May 16.

“Congratulations to these outstanding educators for inspiring a love of science in our students and encouraging them to succeed so that they will be prepared when they enter Freeport High School and experience the rigorous science curriculum and opportunities available in the fields of science,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham said.

Peter Capaccio, who began working in the Freeport School District in 2004, is an eighth grade Earth Science teacher at J.W. Dodd Middle School whose students have consistently achieved outstanding passing and mastery scores on the Earth Science Regents. Many of his students have gone on to succeed on Advanced Placement exams and the Unites States Physics and Chemistry Olympiad examinations. His teaching infuses his students with a passion for science which they will carry throughout their careers.

Donna Rusinek, who began working in the Freeport School District in 2002, is the English as a New Language teacher at Archer Street School. She also serves as the science facilitator for the elementary school. As the science facilitator, she is responsible for the science curriculum and designing meaningful laboratory experiences that enhance student understanding of science and inspires students to develop a lifelong love of science. Donna is a passionate believer that the study of science will accelerate a student’s acquisition of any new language.
